What are Fibroids? Some Common Symptoms and Cures.

Fibroids, also known as uterine fibroids or leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. They are composed of muscle cells and other tissues that grow within the wall of the uterus. While many women with fibroids may not experience any symptoms, others may face various challenges.

Some Common symptoms of fibroids include:

  1. Menstrual changes: Fibroids can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, or irregular periods.

  2. Pelvic pain and pressure: Some women may experience pelvic pain or discomfort, as well as a feeling of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen.

  3. Frequent urination: Large fibroids can press against the bladder, leading to a frequent need to urinate.

  4. Constipation or difficulty with bowel movements: Fibroids that press on the rectum may cause constipation or make bowel movements uncomfortable.

  5. Backache or leg pains: Fibroids can sometimes press on nerves, causing backache or leg pains.

Treatment options for fibroids currently available in India:

  1. Medications: Non-surgical approaches involve medications such as hormonal therapy (birth control pills, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists) to regulate hormonal fluctuations and manage symptoms.

  2. Non-invasive procedures: Techniques like uterine artery embolization (UAE) and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) are less invasive procedures that can shrink or destroy fibroids without surgery.

  3. Surgical options: Surgical interventions include myomectomy (removing the fibroids while preserving the uterus) and hysterectomy (removing the uterus). The choice of surgery depends on factors such as the size, number, and location of fibroids, as well as the woman's desire for future fertility.

  4. Laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgery: Minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgeries, may be performed to remove or shrink fibroids, reducing recovery time compared to traditional open surgery.

The choice of treatment depends on factors such as the size and location of the fibroids, the severity of symptoms, and the woman's reproductive goals. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most suitable treatment plan based on individual circumstances.
